The Fatal Realities of "Fortress Europe" 20 June 2001 International Refugee Day
Last June, the case of 58 Chinese who died in a lorry on its way to Dover (UK) shocked all in Europe. Their case does not stand alone. While European governments reacted only by more repressive measures, the UNITED network believes that these policies create the crime. It is only when we acknowledge the fact that Europe is an immigration continent, that we can deal with the effects and work towards more livable solutions.

On
4 December 2000 the General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously
adopted a resolution to proclaim 20 June World Refugee Day. The
first such World Refugee Day would coincide with the celebration
of the fiftieth anniversary of the 1951 Geneva Convention on
refugees.
